Student Health and Wellness

The Royal Wellness Room, or “R-Dub”, is part of a new initiative by the Santa Barbara

Unified School District to increase the well-being of students and provide a safe place

outside of class to deal with emotions and de-stress. It is located in the back of the library, near the center of campus.

The R-Dub provides multiple opportunities for students to recharge and cope with their stress.

  1. We have an on-site Wellness Coach who students can work through their emotions with.
  2. If you are feeling overwhelmed/stressed, anxious, sad, or lonely, instead of suffering through their class or visiting the restroom, this room is a good place to come and recharge.
  3. We also have numerous activities, such as art, kinetic sand, stress balls/fidgets, mindfulness activities, yoga mats, comfy chairs to rest in, legos, magnetic tiles, and a screen to watch calming media.

FAQs

  1. Why would a student visit the Royal Wellness Room?
  • Students can visit the R-Dub for a mental health break. If they are feeling overwhelmed/stressed, anxious, sad, or lonely this is a good place to come and recharge. Our goal is to have them talk with a trusted adult and get some additional help if needed.
  1. Does a student get to go to the Royal Wellness Room any time they request a visit?
  • No. There are times where the R-Dub will be closed. Also, making multiple requests to the R-Dub will trigger a conversation with the Dean and the student’s family about what is really going on. The Royal Wellness Room isn’t a place to avoid school work but a place to take an occasional break and begin more supportive resources if needed. If the R-Dub is closed and a student is requesting a visit they will be redirected to their counselor or Dean Becks.
  1. Are parents aware of their student visiting the R-Dub?
  • Potentially. If the student is attempting to take advantage of the resource then yes, admin will be in communication with the student’s family. If the student is in danger to themselves or others, then yes, admin will be in communication with the student’s family. Parents are not directly notified each time a student visits the Wellness Center but this isn’t necessarily information we will withhold from a family either.
  1. What does a student do in the Wellness Center?
  • We have several options! Art, kinetic sand, stress balls/fidgets, mindfulness activities, yoga mats, comfy chairs to rest in, legos, magnatiles, and ultimately an adult that will connect and assess what the student may need in the moment.
  1. Are students responsible for completing work they might have missed while in the Wellness Center?
  • Yes. This is not an opportunity to miss out on assignments or assessments and students will have to work with you to figure out what they missed and how to catch up. This will not be a regular occurrence so the workload shouldn’t be too much.
