Athletic Director's Message

A Message from Athletic Director Dr. Frann Wageneck

Welcome to San Marcos High School Athletics!

I am absolutely thrilled to step into the role of Athletic Director for our Royals! Interscholastic athletics are where our kids build identity, resilience, and lifelong friendships. While our scoreboards measure game day outcomes, our true victory is watching our student-athletes grow into exceptional human beings.

Our program is guided by Seven Core Principles that define who we are every single day:

Our Core Principles

  1. Uncompromising Integrity & Sportsmanship: We represent San Marcos with honor. On the field, in the stands, and in our community, we respect opponents, honor officials, and hold ourselves to absolute accountability.

  2. A Caring & Welcoming Environment: Athletics is a home. We build an inclusive space where athletes feel safe to take risks, learn from mistakes, and grow together as a family.

  3. Academics Always Come First: We are educators first, and high school academics come before everything. Championship habits begin in the classroom long before stepping onto the field.

  4. Modern Strategy & Technology: Our coaches utilize modern tools—including video study—to sharpen execution, boost performance, and prepare our kids for success.

  5. Multi-Sport Participation: We actively encourage multi-sport participation. Playing different sports prevents burnout, reduces injuries, and builds well-rounded leaders for our whole campus.

  6. Science-Backed Athletic Development: We prioritize health and safety by using scientifically affirmed training programs to build strength, speed, and long-term injury resilience.

  7. Accountability & Community Engagement: Win or lose, we stand proudly by our kids. Our coaches share results with local media to highlight effort, celebrate growth, and showcase our athletes' hard work.

The Heart of Our Program: Partnership

A thriving athletic culture takes a village, and we cannot do this without you:

  • Our Families: You are our primary partners. Your energy, encouragement, and shared values give our student-athletes the foundation to soar.

  • Our Alumni & Community: Royal pride runs deep across Santa Barbara! Your ongoing support and rich traditions inspire our current teams to aim higher.

  • San Marcos Athletic Boosters: I am endlessly grateful for our Athletic Boosters. Your tireless fundraising, volunteer hours, and advocacy provide the resources, gear, and facility upgrades that elevate the experience for every sport on campus.

I can’t wait to see our stands full and our teams competing with heart and joy. Bring your energy, your positive sportsmanship, and your Royal pride to every game!

Together, let’s make this an unforgettable year. Go Royals!
